Particular Software profile

How do you maintain flexibility & balance for your team?

We hire exceptional people who are committed, well organized, and self-motivated. We encourage them to work the hours that suit them best and to balance outside life and interests because we trust they will get their work done. We have very generous leave policies for vacation, national holidays, sick/health time, and parental leave and we encourage our employees to take advantage of it. Their health and happiness is vital for the company’s health and happiness. We don’t believe in deadlines which both allows for work to be done right and on a schedule that works for our employees, not the other way around.

How do you ensure autonomy and plan for the future?

Particular is a fully distributed company with a flat hierarchy (no supervisors) and a very open and transparent culture. All work at the company is visible and divided into either “squad” work or “task force” work. Squad work is analogous to a business area in more traditional companies and squad members are analogous to managers who prioritize work for task forces to do. All employees have the opportunity to participate in squads and task forces. In addition, they choose the specific task forces they work on based on their ability and availability. Everyone can also comment on any other area of the company and are encouraged to do so.

How does your company try to hire people from underrepresented groups and improve the diversity of your team?

At Particular, we strongly believe in the importance and value of diverse groups. As a fully remote company, we have built a flexible work environment that supports staff in their individual life needs. Our strong focus on transparency, open communication, and an active feedback culture helps to create an inclusive company. Our work model gives every employee the ability to influence company decisions. In addition, we're constantly reviewing our actions and aiming to eliminate exclusion factors, e.g. by training staff on unconscious bias, reviewing our use of language, and adjusting our hiring process to ensure we source our candidates from a more diverse pool. We are still early in our journey but continue investing in diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging.

How do you support your team to grow and improve?

A healthy and active feedback culture is part of our core values and is built into our work processes in various ways. We are encouraged to give and receive feedback to fellow staff members and even our CEO. In addition, we believe that learning accelerates outside of comfort zones. Staff are encouraged to work in areas that are outside of their expertise and in fact, we have no internal job titles because almost every staff member may work in any given business area.
