Privacy-first email built for you. Make an impact in a company driven by values.

Fastmail profile

Fastmail is the email service that puts people first. When the vast majority of people get email for free, the reason people choose a paid service is because they value both privacy and a great user experience. Your email is kept away from advertisers who would want to monetize your data. And you get thoughtful productivity tools that help you get more done and spend less time on email.

You’ll work on our best-in-breed email, calendars, contacts and more. Improving our customers’ experience, keeping it secure and a delight to use, is what we do every day.

You’ll be part of our collaborative team, including front- and back-end developers, designers, researchers, our support team, and more. Our teams are primarily based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Melbourne, Australia. We have a strong in-person culture, combined with plenty of individual flexibility -- because your job should work for your life, not the other way around. Everyone on our team is set up for work from home, whether it's part of your planned schedule or just to deal with a plumbing emergency.

At Fastmail, we believe in helping people live a connected, enriching life, and that’s not just for our customers. Our staff is composed of people with real lives and diverse interests, and our enthusiasm for pursuing what matters is foundational to who we are. We offer great benefits, competitive pay, and an environment where you can thrive as a whole person.

How do you maintain flexibility & balance for your team?

Our culture is geared towards investing in each other over the long term. We have a generous leave policy and your manager will strongly encourage you to use it. We have two additional weeks of sick leave so that no one on our team feels like taking a sick day is a choice between taking care of themselves now or taking a break later. All staff accrue credit toward a paid sabbatical because we know that sometimes it takes more than a week or two to pursue the things that matter most in life. We want you to live your life now, not plan to live it later.

Fastmail has staff in the US, Australia, and India. Our teams work closely together, which means a meeting at off-hours, now and then. Because no one should be expected to read chat scrollback, Slack is explicitly noted as a replacement for live conversation only. We do our best work when we work together, so we have more permanent written resources to help us collaborate: Notion is for everything from strategic and project planning to staff pet bios; we developed our Topicbox product to help teams share the information they were already putting into email every day, and treat that as our repository of must-have internal info for projects, clients, and teams.

We ask for flexibility from the team and of course, prioritize providing it in return. We work with staff to figure out regular schedules that keep us connected to one another without feeling welded to our work. We work hard to share skills, so there are no single points of failure. Our (rare) emergencies get handled by someone on the other side of the globe during their workday!

How do you ensure autonomy and plan for the future?

We're an employee-owned company, and our goals are to build a great product and a great place to work. Space is specifically held aside for teams' internal priorities, so we have time to build a better future for ourselves, as well as for our customers.

Work happens mostly in small cross-functional teams that work together to address the parts of the problem where they're the experts. (Project managers are here to help the various teams' work mesh and to keep the wider company in the loop.)

Having a shared vision of where we're headed makes it possible for each staffer to make decisions with confidence. We revisit vision and long term strategy every 3 years. We assess progress and plan annually, both as teams and as a company. We hold quarterly meetings to keep everybody updated on how things are going and what's coming next. (These are live-streamed and recorded, so everyone can take part in whatever way is easiest for them.)
Deep Work Long-Term Planning Shared Goal Setting

How does your company try to hire people from underrepresented groups and improve the diversity of your team?

We recognize diverse lived experiences help us build better products and a stronger team. We prioritize a hiring process that invites our applicants to shine, rather than an adversarial mentality. We include diverse representation on our interview panels, to remove unconscious bias and avoid missing red flags. We recognize that people with non-traditional backgrounds bring valuable broader skills, so our role requirements are constructed to remove unnecessary credentials and focus on demonstrated skills. We recruit in numerous places, including boards for women, LGBTQIA+, and people of color.

Fastmail has executive and management teams that are 50% women. We continue to work to increase people of color in leadership roles.

How do you support your team to grow and improve?

Fastmail is focused on providing a supportive growth environment from your first day. You'll begin your role with us with an onboarding point person, and a multi-day introduction to our product and customers with our support team. First projects and milestones are visible in our shared onboarding document, so we all know we're working towards the same goals.

Ongoing support starts in your bi-weekly 1:1s with your manager. This is your time, to discuss your personal goals, your challenges, the kinds of opportunities you're looking for, and to get feedback and coaching. This will also be the place to discuss formal professional development opportunities. We allocate a professional development budget for everyone on staff, and we want you to use it to grow!

We work hard to retain and promote our staff, helping to match them with opportunities in the company.
