dbt Labs, Inc profile
dbt Labs is on a mission to help analysts create and disseminate organizational knowledge. Having pioneered the practice of analytics engineering, we're now fortunate to support a community of over 15,000 data practitioners committed to changing how data teams work
How do you maintain flexibility & balance for your team?
We are a fully distributed, remote-first culture. Every team member is given the flexibility to design their own work environment and schedule. We rely on asynchronous communication to collaborate effectively and keep everyone in the know and live by our value of transparency.
How do you ensure autonomy and plan for the future?
Given our remote, asynchronous culture, each team member is encouraged to make decisions and progress towards their goals without needing approval from leadership.Â
How does your company try to hire people from underrepresented groups and improve the diversity of your team?
We have formed three separate DEI groups focused on the areas of company stance, team diversity, and inclusion, and our culture. Each group has made progress in giving folks the space to raise concerns, determining how we decide when to not work with a company that does not align with our values, hiring a diverse team and continuing to build diverse pipelines and hosting events and speaking opportunities for our team to celebrate who we are.Â
We have recognized that, because everyone in these groups has other full-time roles, we have not been able to push initiatives forward as quickly as we would like. Because of that, we are hiring a DEI Coordinator who will be responsible for the project management of these initiatives.Â
We also have a very diverse team when it comes to gender, but we have more work to do from a racial diversity standpoint and we're actively working on that.

How do you support your team to grow and improve?
We have a company-wide OKR related to internal mobility. We would like 10% of our open roles to be filled internally, either through switching teams or moving into management. We are currently ahead of that goal.Â
Additionally, we have a formal L&D stipend that team members can use on anything that would help grow their careers. We offer new manager training through LifeLabs learning and also engage with Lifelabs to host workshops with our team.Â
