Mission-driven, distributed global company. We democratize publishing and commerce so anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or where they live in the world.

Automattic, Inc. profile

We’re a mission-driven, fully distributed company with 1700+Automatticians in 88 countries speaking 114 different languages. We’re committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and believe in making the web a better place for everyone.

More than 1 billion people use our products every month. We also contribute directly to WordPress, the open source project that powers over 40% of the internet.

We are the people behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads, VaultPress, Akismet, Gravatar, Crowdsignal, Cloudup, Tumblr, Day One, Pocket Casts and more. We believe in making the web a better place.

We believe in Open Source and the vast majority of our work is available under the GPL.

How do you maintain flexibility & balance for your team?

Wellness support, sabbaticals, and more.

Choose your own adventure — create the work environment and schedule that empowers you to perform at your very best. We care about the work you produce, not the hours you put in. We work asynchronously; results, not clock-punching, are what we’re about. Work the hours you choose, in the location you choose.

Our open vacation policy (no set number of days per year) is designed to help you to be at your best. And there’s open parental leave (including maternity, paternity, LGBTQ+, and adoption for all parents): if you’ve been with Automattic for 12 months, your leave up to 6 months is fully paid.

As a fully remote, distributed company since our founding, we know the importance of work/life balance and we’re experts at iterating on and constantly improving the employee experience in this area.

How do you ensure autonomy and plan for the future?

As a fully transparent company, we discuss every decision with everyone.

For every feature we launch, we gather metrics about its usage, interaction, and growth in addition to listening to the masses of feedback we get on our blog and through support channels. This helps us inform decisions about new features and enhancements. It’s not uncommon to launch a feature and then iterate immediately.

We have a one-button deploy system for WordPress.com, and we push code to the site 60–80 times a day. WordPress.com is synced with the WordPress.org trunk pretty much every weekday. We’re strong believers in Open Source, and we try to open source everything we can.

How does your company try to hire people from underrepresented groups and improve the diversity of your team?

As an Open Source-driven company, we believe in the power of people, rely on the diversity of global perspectives, and strive to be more and more inclusive.

In 2014 we started to work, as a company, on facilitating spaces for discussions about diversity at Automattic. And at the 2016 Grand Meetup with all of our employees across 50 countries, we decided to share with the rest of the world what we are doing about diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In the past we’ve supported organizations like Mother Coders, TechWomen, The Representation Project, and Outreachy. We’re especially proud of supporting Accelerate.lgbt. We’re thrilled to work and partner with other companies and institutions that share our values. And we celebrate the achievements of those who use our software to tell their stories, especially when they come from under-heard voices and marginalized communities.

Our commitment to diverse global experiences and insights is baked into our Creed and is also reflected in ARGs such as Cocomattic (for Automatticians of color), Neurodiversomattic, and Queeromattic.

And we’re continually iterating on our referral and hiring processes to remove unconscious bias. It’s a layer-by-layer process, with regularly cadenced check-ins to evaluate and course-correct. With time and effort, all problems (even prejudice) can be solved; we seek progress, not perfection.

How do you support your team to grow and improve?

“I will never stop learning” is part of our company creed. We happily provide or reimburse hardware and software you’ll need, as well as books or conferences that promote continued learning.

Coaching sessions to help you set and achieve professional goals are available for all Automatticians—team members and team leads. This benefit resets each calendar year.
