How do you maintain flexibility & balance for your team?
We are not a “top-down” organization, and you’ll quickly see that we value employees as our biggest asset and expect them to speak up and work together in order to make us better. You’ll work with a team that believes that success is measured by more than just the bottom line. We empower employees and teams to solve problems and find ways to improve how we work. How do you ensure autonomy and plan for the future?
While we do have a leadership team, we rely heavily on employees and teams to help us define strategic direction. We have a 10-year vision that was developed collaboratively with all employees. Annual strategic planning is a company-wide event. We practice open-book management and expect all employees to understand expenses, revenue, and how our business functions. We're also working towards employee ownership, so an owner mindset is important.
How does your company try to hire people from underrepresented groups and improve the diversity of your team?
We have an employee-run committee that meets regularly to discuss diversity & inclusion. While we consider ourselves to be diverse, and value our differences - we recognize it is an ongoing effort. Specifically we've identified select job boards, HBCUs, and local organizations to source new candidates. We also schedule monthly "tea talks" to discuss a variety of topics designed to challenge our thinking.
How do you support your team to grow and improve?
We've invested a lot of time into developing what we call "career progression". In this process employees can expect to have candid conversations with managers and founders about their goals. It's important that we understand employee goals, align them with the company vision, and team objectives. You can expect regular interactions and check-ins with managers and teams. Out of this process comes a personal development plan which is fully supported by the organization.
