Basecamp has been a remote-first company since 1999. Our greatest asset has always been our team. We work hard to make sure every employee is given the freedom, tools, trust, and support to do the best work of their careers. That's why so many people who work at Basecamp stay at Basecamp!

We make Basecamp, a a project management tool and overall better way to work. We also recently launched HEY, our take on email.

How do you maintain flexibility & balance for your team?

We value helping our employees lead healthy lives outside of work. We don’t treat life as dead code to be optimized away with shallow perks. We'll never find lures to keep people coding ever longer, answering one more email, or making one last design tweak. We believe quality time to focus on work starts with quality time to think, exercise, prepare a meal, be with family & friends, pick up your kids from school, and of course, time to one's self.

How do you ensure autonomy and plan for the future?

We value what we call "Managers of One". People who can devise their own goals and execute them. People who don’t need heavy direction or daily check-ins. They do what a manager would do — set the tone, assign items, determine what needs to get done, etc. — but they do it by themselves and for themselves.

How do you support your team to grow and improve?

Professional growth is very much driven by the individual. It's up to everyone at Basecamp to determine where they'd like to see their career go and devise a plan to get there. Managers and colleagues are of course available to support that path, especially in someone's first year at Basecamp, and we have a robust network of informal mentors.
